As a Partner Agent with 55Places, specializing in all the 55+ Active Adult communities in the entire Greater Charlotte region, I occasionally receive inquiries from perspective buyers who are not completely familiar with what it means when a community says that it offers an “Active Adult Lifestyle”?

The terminology used to describe these communities can encompass a number of different things, but most descriptions include some of these terms: included lawn maintenance, full-time Lifestyle Director, planned recreational activities, low maintenance homes, social clubs, lots of classes and more.

The majority of buyers that we work with say they are looking for neighborhoods with lots of social activities, nice amenities, a “sense of community” and a low maintenance or maintenance-free home.   Many are looking for a “lock and leave” lifestyle where they can lock up their home and travel for extended periods of time – knowing that their home and lawn will be maintained while they are away.  For others, they simply want to live among peers who share similar interests. We have many communities in our area that can check off all of these boxes for our buyers.

Many of the homes in these communities offer features that will allow the owners to “age in place” in their own home, the most obvious being single-level living. In addition, builders can also include other features such as homes built with no steps entering the home, zero-entry showers, lever-style door handles, lower cabinet heights…just to name a few. There are even builders who offer homes with universal design, or barrier-free design, making the home safe and accessible for anyone who lives, visits or uses the space, by adding design concepts such as wider doors and hallways – which can also make the home feel more spacious.

As for amenities, they vary widely from community to community.  You may choose to work out on your own in a fitness center or sign up for exercise classes. You can go for a walk on the neighborhood walking trails, take a dip in the indoor pool or lay out by the Cabana at the outdoor resort-style pool;  sign up for art classes, play tennis, bocce ball or pickleball, take in a game of billiards or cards or just enjoy a nice meal in the restaurant…all without ever leaving your community.

Another big draw to these communities is that most of the larger active adult communities have full-time Lifestyle Directors on staff who organize and maintain the social calendar for the community. Besides planning events, they also help to manage the clubs that the community has set up and can even assist you in starting your own club if there is one that you would like to organize. The Lifestyle Director makes sure that there are always plenty of planned activities available, but you can certainly choose to be as involved (or as uninvolved) as you would like to be. Rest assured – there will always be plenty of activities available if, and when, you are interested.

Who doesn’t enjoy having a ‘sense of community’ where you have friends and neighbors to grill out with, cheer on your favorite sports teams, watch after your pets while you are away, as well as just to have companionship with.  These communities also provide you with great friends who are there to support you through times of loss as well as to celebrate the happy times in your family!

When selecting the active adult community that best meets your needs, many factors will affect that decision:

·        Size of the community

·        Community Amenities

·        Style of the homes

·        Capital Contributions and Monthly HOA fees

·        Location of the community

·        Lifestyle options available in the community

We look forward to being a great resource for you as you begin your search for an Active Adult Lifestyle.  Since we assist clients in all the “55 and Better” communities in this entire region, we have great working relationships established with the onsite builder representatives in all of these communities.

With a good understanding of your specific wants and needs in your next home and community...we can help guide you to the perfect place - where you can experience an amazing Active Adult Lifestyle!
