THE UGLY TRUTH ABOUT THOSE GORGEOUS TREES!
I think that we all will agree that trees are a beautiful addition to the landscaping around our homes, but they can also cause some major problems that cost lots of money to remedy. So before you decide on what trees to plant near your home, you may want to do a little research about the trees you have in mind.
Roots that grow near a foundation or a utility line could cause serious damage. A tree that is decades of years old will have a large root system and those roots can push into the foundation of your home and cause it to become unsteady or crack in a way that could compromise the integrity of the structure. This can happen when planting a tree too close to a house. Not only can the roots cause risk to the foundation of your home, but they can also cause cracking in concrete sidewalks, driveways, patios, etc.
We recently had to have a very large Magnolia tree and an enormous Maple tree removed that the previous owner pf our home had planted much too close to the home and the garage. The roots had already damaged our stamped concrete patio and we were fearful that they might also damage the foundation of our home and/or grow into our utility lines/water lines.
In general, arborists say that tree roots will grow between 1-3 times the width of the tree’s canopy and in some cases, trees can develop roots that are two times its height. Some trees have more aggressive roots and they definitely should be planted far away from foundations, water pipes, sidewalks, and septic lines.
When underground sewer and water pipes develop small cracks, roots can find their way into those cracks which could lead to a burst line and pools of water and/or sewage in your yard.
So before you select a tree solely based on its beauty and decide on its permanent location, do yourself a favor and do some research on how big the tree will grow, as well as what kind of root system that particular variety has. You may just save yourself lots of headaches and thousands of dollars!
